Thank you to the volunteers, judges, and participants for helping to make this a
fun and successful event. This year we started the event an hour earlier than usual
in an effort to miss the Colorado Springs afternoon thunderstorms. So a very special
thanks to the Brisse family, Rick Brydum, Matt DiAno, Chris Sexton, and Amanda Guth,
who came down from the Denver area extra early to start setting up at 7am.
The weather was perfect with clear skies and very light breezes. With all the spring
rain this year, the grass was thick and green. The park has some nice trees at the end
of the field so spectators and newcomers can sit in the shade while watching the event.
We had several first time competitors in the Novice Division. The top scores in the
Novice division were very close with Mickey Milbee and Yukon in 1st with 17.5 points,
Curtis Lucero and Jake in 2nd with 16.5 points, and Denny McCarty and Bear in 3rd with
14.5 points. Kerry Samet and Maggie were right in the pack taking 4th with 12 points.
This year, we gave a prize for the highest Distance/Accuracy round of day. On Sunday,
the top D/A round was made by Gayle O’Malley and Sheela with an amazing 21.5 point
score in the second round of Intermediate Distance/Accuracy. That score combined with
Gail’s super first round gave the Intermediate 1st Place to Gail and Sheela. We had a
very competitive intermediate division with the round two cut at a whopping 11 points.
Intermediate 2nd Place went to Jay Smartz and Durango , and 3rd to Darrel Earle and
Tracy’s dog Angus (don’t worry, Angus got the yummy Wag N’ Wash cookies).
Skyhoundz plaques went to the top three places in Freestyle only. This was fun because
the placings usually change drastically after the Open D/A round and it is nice to recognize
the folks that had an excellent Freestyle round. In the Freestyle round of the Open division
Mark Brisse and Gabby were in 1st, Becky Mueller and FlyGirl were in 2nd, and Chris Sexton
and Laika were in 3rd. They all received Skyhoundz plaques and prizes for their super
freestyle routines. One surprise was the excellent freestyle routine performed by Matt
DiAno and Maggie, the first time Freestyle competitors and 2004 Rookie of the Year team.
They were standing in 5th place after the Freestyle round! Amada Guth also put on a
super performance with her new dog Lucy.
In the Open division, Brent Broadstone and Sir Charles came from behind with a whopping 19.5
D/A score to take 1st in the Open division. Congratulations Brent! The fabulous Brisse Frisbee
family took 2nd with Mark and Gabby, and 3rd with Jenn and Cheyenne. In addition, Amanda and
Lucy came in 4th. How’s that for Lucy’s first time! On the home front, I finally placed ahead
of my hubby, Fred (Yeah!), but after the Freestyle round, Fred realized that Kona was wearing
her citronella bark collar so she was afraid to catch the Frisbee! However, I am proud of my
7th place finish!
